I've got some rather large Carex clumps that I want to divide and spread around. Is there a best time of year to do this? How small can you make the divisions? Do the various species and hybrids differ in techniques?

The roots are relatively shallow, I have had success with using a flat bladed shovel and scooping them out and pulling them apart. They seem to root and grow fairly easily.

I agree with Rj. If one clump grows well in your garden, then 4 will do fine. Quarter your clumps and spread the wealth.
