I pruned most of my roses last week - on that one sunny day we had, and wondered if I should have propped the cuttings. What is the best time? I just left the cuttings in a pile, now I'm thinking I should have potted them up.

I still have a few roses to go, if I wait until I get back from vaca in a few weeks, it it a good time?

Some of those cuttings in the pile might grow, Lali. That's what happens here during the rainy season. If I don't pick up all of the cuttings, I get little surprise roses all over the place. Two weeks from now will still be a good time to do it.

I stuck three cuttings of 'About Face' in a pot in the fall and one took! It was just a whim, I had an empty pot next to my tree rose that I got when we went to Fallon's. I just wasn't sure if they're more 'programmed' to be putting out new foliage now vs. roots.

Definitely roots for now, especially while it's raining. After they get over the shock of being cut, they'll start working on foliage too.

I did some cuttings for Evey months and months ago, obviously at the wrong time because they're still tiny, tiny things on top, but I think (and hope) they must have killer root balls by now.

Best time is in the fall and spring...

I need to do some cuttings for a trade of a Purple Lady Banks. It's winter here now with snow and freezing temps from time to time. Should I take cuttings as soon as she starts waking up? Or wait??? I haven't ever successfully propagated a rose.
Any tips on how to mail the cuttings? Dip ends in rooting hormone? Wrap ends in damp paper towel? Whole cuttings in damp paper towel? Throw in the damp paper towel? Help please!

Where to start? Purple Lady Banks? Didn't think there was a purple....Maybe it is a rose whose name is Veilchenblau? If so, that one is really easy to propagate..I started a bunch of cuttings and have a number of plants.
I started my cuttings after the rose had bloomed..but you might try when the rose first wakes up, and after it blooms and see what happens.
Just me, I don't use any rooting hormone...I have been told it expires quickly and since so little is used at a time, I would never use it before it wasn't viable any more...
I have mailed a lot of cuttings and what has worked for me is remove the leaves toward the end of the cutting and wrap them in damp paper towels (not wet! just damp)
Then I put them in a baggie and mail them so they go fast.

I see Melva has sweetly answered your questions, but I have to say how happy I am to see you here. Please post some photos of your kitties and dogs in the "Our Companions" forum in this cubit. I know Lemonysnicket's darling kittens became cats long ago, but they'll always be kittens to me.

That does look just like my rose, Melva. I bought it as a Purple Lady Banks but I really think it's that one. My yellow Lady was a monster that tried literally to take over the house! The purple is much more ladylike. I will have to change the name over in my journal.

Lali, scratch what I said about Galway Bay. It looks great. It's El Cid that's still puny and struggling. We bought them the same day, so I get them confused.

I pruned some of my roses yesterday and saved cuttings from Molineux, Graham Thomas and Geschwind's Orden. They are now in glasses of water and I'm hoping for some rooting to take place. I'm afraid to set them outside for rooting because we'll probably have at least one more cold snap before spring truly arrives, even though we're having some very pleasant weather now. Any suggestions? Should I pot them up with Rootone and potting mix?

I tried to root out a BlueGirl last year, and forgot to water it. Oops. Made a very nice mummified rose, though.

After Wildeve finally blooms, I will have to cut her back by nearly half. I didn't know that she would get so big, and have been intimidated by pruning. Eve is healthy enough to survive any potential pruning mistakes, I should just get on with it. I'll have to try rooting the cuttings. I posted an easy way from Paul Barden, essentially wrapping in damp newspaper and plastic and forgetting it. I am tempted to add a bit of rooting powder to the ends.

At the moment, I am battling aphids and waiting for my first flush of blooms. Here is Eve last year.

Okay. I need to make some cuttings for a trade and I've read Melva's advice above, but I need to know how long those cuttings should be and if I go above or below the bud. Any suggestions?
