Thread OP

Picked up this fella at a plant sale at the campus library earlier this afternoon. Beautiful, but after a couple of hours, some of the leaves are starting to wrinkle/curl. Leaves are obviously variegated, but whereas the green, non-vein parts were a deep and consistent color when I first got it, you can see its starting to mottle a bit. Pink flowers. No luck trying to identify thus far. Can anyone take a crack at it?

Cheers

Welcome! to ATP - what a cool plant! I have something similar and its a sinningia, I think this is some type of gesnariad (which is genus that african violets and cape primrose and gloxinia are in)
Here is a photo of the plants that I love that are called cape primrose (streptocarpus)

And a sinningia

And finally here is a link to the gesneriad society, (just in case, even though most likely someone on here will ID your plant!)

As Greg has suggested, that pretty plant could very well be a Gesneriad; possibly Achimenes or Smithiantha.

I hope you will post another photo when the flower opens.

It really looks familiar to me too but I just can't put my finger on the plant that I'm thinking of. At first I thought it kinda resembled Lamium but I don't think that's right. I'm not totally convinced that it's in the Gesneriad family either. I'm curious to know if the leaves are pubescent (soft, hairy) or glabrous, or succulent like.

Maybe a Pilea? Not sure I've seen that before. Love the purple backs!

I agree with gg5 some type of gesnariad. Especially with the red under side of the leaf, I just recently read a description of a plant that mentioned it. I will look back and see if I can find the name.

Take a look at this one I think the leaf looks simular not varigated but maybe the same shape and it also mentions red-backed leaves. It is a type of Columnea, in the gesnariad family.

Thanks Donna, it has a fun story too!! I joined ATP last November and since then have just been oohing and aahing at people's yards and plants (mostly on here via photos) well I walked by this woman's house and saw several of these popping up and said "oohh! what are these, they're so wonderful looking?" and "Have they been here long because I've never noticed them before and I walk by this house at least 2 times per week!" Anyway we began talking and she doesn't know the name, had just gotten them from a friend and had an extra gallon container of at least one, but probably several! How fun is that!! I am going to give her some Iris rhizomes in another week or so.
BTW I love your cute Avatar! Is/was that in your yard?? Its really cute! I tip my hat to you.

Could it be from the 'zebra plant' family? Check it out online. Hope you find it!

Hi AliSid, Welcome! I guess I never updated this post...they are Japanese Fuki plants...I didn't end up keeping any because it seems they like lots of water so gave them to a friend who has a boggy area in her yard, they are doing fantastic!
Butterbur (Petasites japonicus)
I tip my hat to you.

I'm totally confused. None of the pics in this discussion look like Petasites, but that's a plant I've only seen in pics.

Was Rusty's plant ever ID'd?

Everyone should be confused - I don't know how it happened ( Angel ) but I completely mixed up 2 threads and so the post I was responding to was my own from a year ago when I first mixed up this thread Thumbs down The plant the lady gave me was not a houseplant it was/is Japanese fuki or Butterbur (Petasites japonicus)
But this has nothing to do with the ID question - sorry people! @alisid I agree with your id - zebra plant!!
Hilarious! I tip my hat to you.

@Dave, There are currently no photos of Trailing Velvet Plant (Ruellia makoyana) in our database, would it be appropriate to move rusty3019's photos over?
