One of my cuttings had some rot at the bottom, which I cut off. An additional area near the base of a branch was very soft and leaked no sap when poked with a nail. I assumed it was rot so I cut it off. The inside is white but separating from the outer layer. Is this just severe dehydration? Did I make a mistake cutting it?

What conditions is it normally in? Outside, full sun, and humidity? It doesn't look black but maybe knowing more about the conditions it's in and seeing more pictures with different angles might help.

@drdawg Ken, have you seen anything like this?

There is no healthy white sap coming out on this cutting.

I have seen this many times, but I've never known what it actually represents. If it is clearly healthy, white tissue, even if little or no "latex" sap weeps out, I go ahead and root it. I've never kept records of any sort as to whether these cuttings root the same as those with no separation. I'm sorry that I don't have better information.
