Hi there, newer homeowner and new to Acer's. My father in law has a few and I love them and want to weave them into our landscape. I have a bunch of area's I want to put different acres in but the first one is up on a small hillside that I'm landscaping but it only gets a couple hours of direct sun a day. Few hours in morning, few hours at sunset. Most of the JM''s I see that do great in shade are of the green/yello/orange variety...Are there any of the red ones that look like bonsai/slightly weeping (ie: not like the Bloodgood) that would do great in only 2-3 hours of direct sun a day? Anything remotely looking like the one this sample I uploaded is what im going for.

Can you share where you live? That will help determine the answer.
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and proclaiming...."WOW What a Ride!!" -Mark Frost

The reason I asked is the further north you go, the more sun they can handle. This is a link to Weston Nursery Japanese Maple Library in Hingham, Massachusetts. Each maple listed has size, sunlight (for Massachusetts), hardiness zone and a description.

Yes I've already done a ton of research and I'm more confused now than I ever was I just need opinions for people who actually have the experience or have these trees in the shade and know they do well. For the person who said raid dragon, everything i have read about that was that was one of the best cultivars for full sun!
Red Dragon will grow in shade too. It just grows a little faster in the sun, but it's a slow grower anyways. Have you ever checked out MrMaple.com or their youtube videos?

Ya I love how the red dragons look. Will the leaves stay reddish in the shade?
I have it bookmarked to start plowing through some of his YouTube videos soon
