Oh, now we come to one of the best roses in my garden. Vicomtesse Pierre du Fou, a climbing hybrid tea, which is packed with petals. Here's how it starts out:

This is one of the crazy blooms on Wild Thing, a mini. Most of its blooms are fuller, but I like the crazy ones.

Now just a couple of do-overs. This is a better photo of Caramella, the shrub.

And this is a picture for those of you who dread rose mosaic virus. This is the 10th year Berries 'n' Cream has been blooming beautifully in my garden. It's just starting out here and will soon be covered by three times as many blooms. It has shown the symptoms of RMV on its leaves since the year I bought it, so don't be so scared of RMV.

When I first saw Westerland a few years ago I knew it was what I wanted growing up the western facing wall of the house, which gets abundant sunshine. Your bloom of Westerland is exactly the color and structure I wanted, but when I began checking out other photographs of Westerland, they seemed very inconsistent to me, so I began to consider some alternative cultivars with a close resemblance to Westerland, and decided on America instead. Its blooms looked more consistent across different photographs, and I think America may have a little more height than Westerland, which I needed to sufficiently cover the walls. So I built a bamboo trellis from an immense stand of bamboo that oddly grows on my neighbor's land (and who is more than happy for me to cut down as much as I want) and planted four Americas at the base of the trellis, and they took right to it. They're doing quite well.

America is taller and has much better manners. Westerland's really a shrub, so it sends huge canes out in every direction. They're not at all pliable after the first few months and the thorns are hideous. On the other hand, it has more color variation, so both are good roses for different purposes.

Wild Thing is pretty cool; it reminds me of a slice of star fruit.
And Tabris is very nice - it looks like a cross between Handel and Cherry Parfait.
Also, I hadn't realized Soaring Spirits is a single/semi-double. I think I like it better that way because the stripes don't get lost in too many swirls.
The asterisk-like form of Opal Brunner reminds me a lot of April Moon.
And I really appreciate the way you've shown how much some of the shapes and colors of certain roses morph over time - terrific!

Skiekitty, maybe some of the Buck hybrid teas on their own roots would do well for you. Honey Sweet was cane hardy and is almost blooming in my garden.

I love Ash Wednesday, Irish Cream and Julia's rose. I like the smoky coffee colors. I have an iced tea mini that hasn't bloomed yet. I am looking forward to it.

Have to get outside and move some lilies and plant some winter sown seedlings. I know it isn't the best time to move lilies, but they seemed to have multiplied over the winter. They are plotting an invasion of Grenada!

I am considering adding the Kordes 1987 (1986) hybrid tea, Caramella, especially since it is on sale at RU. Not too many people seem to grow it and many sources seem concerned with Caramella the hybrid tea, Caramella the shrub/floribunda and Caramel antique. I love all of them, btw. This particular variety is claimed to frequently have rmv and ru seems to be the only current source. Do you have any signs of rmv on your plant? Did you get it from ru?

Inquiring sales shoppers want to know!!!

I did get mine from RU and I haven't seen any signs of RMV, although it wouldn't bother me if the plant did have RMV, Andi. I have several roses that have been growing here happily for more than 20 years with RMV.

Oops, just asked the same question on another thread....please disregard.

So far, I don't think any of my roses have rmv, but I have only been growing roses about 5 years. I had numerous grafted roses from big box stores that didn't live long enough to manifest signs of any virus PA winters were fatal to them. (I am sure my inexperience didn't help)

I hope my roses (and I) are still going strong in 20 more years -viruses or not.
