I was on vacation and thought I had placed these with enough shade. I guess a week of 100 + temps and too much sun fried these heuffs. Can they be saved ?

Anna, how disappointing to come home and find them that way. I see live tissue which is a good sign. The doctor should be with us soon, I will let him examine the patient and give a diagnosis.

They definitely need the ICU! Considering how many plants I had in pots, I am lucky that it is only two ....however, they are two of my favorites. Thanks for the sympathies. This was Purple Haze before I left.

If you have caught them in time, you should be able to save a couple. Fandango is one that I have and I have noted that it seems to be a bit more fragile than some of the other heuff's such as Purple Haze. I worry about Fandango based on what I see in the picture as it looks like there may be some rot.

Immediately move the pots to a shaded area with bright indirect light and, hopefully, an area with lower temperatures. Give a small sip of water every couple of days and pray. Important: Do not apply water directly to the plant but beside it and make sure that the soil dries out for a few days between each watering. By "small" I mean a few drops of water applied near the plant. Seriously, don't overdo it.

Your plants have been highly stressed and need the water and shade from the sun. However, because they have been stressed, they are very susceptible to rot and mold at this time. If necessary and you can, bring them inside to a bright window that does not get sun and is a cool spot for a week or two.. They need a chance to recover more than they need a lot of light at this time. I would not transplant or move the plants themselves (leave them in the pot). The exception here is that if you have a singleton rosette not part of a cluster and you see it rotting, then you should immediately remove it from the soil and let dry for a few days. Try not to disturb the other plants if you do this.

I think you may lose your Fandango and a few Purple Haze, but it is hard to tell for sure from the pictures. I think, however, that there is a good chance of survival with some TLC.

Exactly, I agree with Chris, it is the female thing, we can't help it twit. My heart sings to see even a tiny post from you. I have to say, my mind was running wild with thoughts of what might have happened to you. I am now secure in knowing all is well.

In east Texas, we have had 16 days of over 100 degrees,
with heat indexes of 110-115. I think many of my small plants
are stressed to the limit. I've moved them from a south porch
where they got a lot of mid-day sun, to the east side where
there is only sun from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
I'm having to water every day, which may be wrong, but I hope
not. The soil gets dry so fast. The grass has patches of dead
and my hostas had so many yellow leaves that I just gave up and
let them go dormant. This weather is very unusual and I'm hoping
for a reprieve soon. I know I've lost many of the ones that I planted
a couple of months ago. The pictures I see posted here are so pretty.

Can you put them inside for a few days of air conditioned comfort (without the daily watering, of course)? They can survive reduced light intensity quite well as long as not wet. Just to get them past the worst of the heat. Sorry you are having problems. It's been tough here as well due to the combination of torrential downpours keeping the plants too wet.

Lynn and Chris - you sweet ladies are so nice to me. I'm doing fine here, trying to keep up with all the garden stuff. With all the rain and heat, the weeds have been really growing fast. I'm starting to see a real problem with the triffids getting out of hand and so hard to keep in check, but fortunately there is a lot of bind weed as well, so there is a bit of balance. Fried triffid is not too bad, resembling asparagus in taste, but like asparagus, I can only eat in small amounts and grow tired of it quickly. The neighbors don't care much for it as well.

The neighbors next door have 5 kids, all under the age of 11. 4 girls and a boy. I've named the girls Meme1, Meme2, Meme3 and Meme4 (1.5yrs old) and the boy Dennis (the menace). (The parents agreed to the naming instantly!)

Of course, most days I get to bed at about 6 AM, just in time for the Meme's to get outside and start screaming....(true story!) . I'm hoping to get the kids interested in the triffids one of these days (or vice versa! )

I'm so glad I live in a quiet neighborhood. The police are often at a house a few doors down from us (drugs), but the people are all quiet. We go to bed a 6 PM - our biggest concern is neighbors mowing the lawn. But it's amazing what I can sleep through.

... and here it's my roosters starting up their racket at 5:00 am! Good thing the neighbors aren't too close. I got rid of two of the noisiest yesterday, so it's remarkably quiet today!

Triffids are a non-native pest in the garden and are really invasive. They are worse than stinging nettle and spread faster than thistle. They are apparently a mutation of a minor weed that occurred sometime in the 1960's, but there are now a couple different forms as apparently the plant genetics are not too stable. I'd rather have to deal with Bermuda crabgrass than triffids. I hope you don't get them in your garden.
