... would logically say what we are looking at is the "back" of the old shade tree bed. But when I or my neighbor walk out our front door this view is the first we see. My neighbor probably would not mind a few more flowers... and that is being worked on. The view of Ferns and Hostas, and particularly the Ferns, is more than enough to get my day off to an excellent start. This strip of bed between the tree and the concrete has also proved to be shaded enough for new ferns in pots that are waiting to be planted in-ground.
This is what the same portion of the shade tree bed looked like in November, 2017:
The Ajuga you see in both photos has long since been moved... before the Hostas and Ferns shaded them into extinction.
And this is what it looked like 30 minutes ago.........................................
I'll close this entry by repeating the words of Louise Beebe Wilder in 'Pleasures and Problems of a Rock Garden'...
"Ferns are a sure investment in pleasure, making of the shaded garden that is well furnished with them a cool retreat in the heat of summer days. Few plants can be naturalized with finer effect."
