We had a new butterfly at the butterfly feeder yesterday (pictures below). Asterocampa clyton (tawny emperor) feeds on hackberry as caterpillars as does the closely related Asterocampa celtis (hackberry emperor). I've mentioned this feeder before and have been forgetting my phone. My phone has a lot of scratches on the camera lens so it lightly frosts pictures. Anyway, these were taken late (after 7 pm) yesterday.

BTW, the feeder is just a common ceramic pie plate with holes drilled into the top edge (hole saw bits make it easier than normal bits) and some hardware store chains and S-hooks. I bait with bananas, leavings from cantaloupes, watermelons, etc. About once every two weeks I toss in a small pinch of Epsom salts. Once in a while I add about a teaspoon or less of molasses. They like peach and nectarine waste as well. In hot and dry periods a quick spritz with a little water softens up the dry parts and makes them available for butterfly puddling behavior.

But wait, there's more! It also draws in vinegar flies (fruit flies to some). The vinegar flies help feed hummingbirds. Last year I watched the acrobatics while they buzzed through and caught flies.

This feeder sits about 5 feet off the ground. You can put them on the ground as well but I find it makes for a better raccoon/opossum feeder when you do that.

One caveat...during Japanese beetle season and June beetle season you may have to clear them out of the mix. Small price to pay for the utility though.
