I'd like to try this. Do you just cut stems and put them in a glass of water? A while back I saw a video that suggested taking cuttings from fruit trees and putting them in a big plastic soda bottle with water in the bottom. Put the cap back on, put in a shaded place and the cuttings should root. I had no luck with apple, but I wonder if something like elderberry might work this way?

So much of gardening is just "try it and see what happens"! My cuttings are in an old coffee can with water, sitting in a bucket under a bush so it gets shade and is not completely out of sight out of mind. The bucket is to keep the cat from tipping the can over. There are still things I have not tried. One would be to use some root tone and plant them directly in soil, another is planting the seeds. And still another would be to wait until the plants make some green shoots next spring and plant those. Something HAS to work!

I'm always more certain of getting plants when I take divisions. I'm meaning to get some divisions off a couple of my viburnums this fall if I can.

Divisions as in digging up part of the roots?

Yes, I look for little shoots or stems coming up around the base of the shrub and try to dig those out with as much root as I can. I was able to get some very nice little flowering plum trees this way. It doesn't work with my apple trees though because all you get is the rootstock, which is usually crabapple or something like that. Not the named variety. I wish I could find the BBC video I saw years ago on how to propagate apple trees from cuttings. The guy just took a stem off a tree and stuck it in the ground...presto...a new apple tree of the named variety.
