The daylily club here struggles but the iris society is doing well. Two things to consider when you get your club formed are an annual show and a sale/auction. Both can help to get new members. We have 2 shows in May. A local radio station gives us good publicity and we take flyers to local nurseries. At the sale we have plants provided by members.....mostly older cultivars which we sell at a good price. We get good attendance from the public. The auction held later in the day is attended mainly by members and features newer cultivars provided by members and also some purchased by the club from favorite hybridizers. We send them a sum of money and they are usually generous. As to speakers, members can be a good resource as speakers sharing the way they grow dls. Good luck.

Thanks everyone for you input. It is very helpful. Michelle, I didn't know that you were President. Next question is what days seem to work best for a meeting? I know when I worked I hated it when the iris club always met during work hours on Thursdays.

Teresa, I've been president for 2 years now; in June we will nominate someone else.

The Pensacola club meets on a Monday evening at 6:30. The Mobile club meets on Sunday at 2:00. If I'm not mistaken, it was before I joined, the Pensacola club had tried several different times and days and Mondays at 6:30 just worked for everyone.
What you can do after you set a day and time is switch it later if it doesn't seem to be working. Just find out from others that you know will be joining what time is good for them and go from there. Also, if these people belong to other clubs you may want to find out when they meet and work around it.

Teresa, I wish you all the best starting a new club. You may want to check with your Regional Membership Chair for some assistance in starting a new club, they can either direct you to someone in AHS to help, or may have a program in place to help new clubs with startup.

I'm very fortunate, my local club meets at the lovely Boerner Botanical Gardens.

We meet once a month on Sunday afternoons at 1:00. Not year round though, generally around 7 months out of the year.

And there's always tons of snacky food/desserts, beverages. Many door prizes. Meetings generally last about 2 hours.

Sandy, that looks like a great place to have a meeting! So inspiring, I love daylilies but enjoy the concept of a complete garden with several types of annuals, perennials, shrubs etc.

Good news, I have a date for a first meeting. It is on a Sat April 13 from 1 to 3pm. I have made some calls to the local garden clubs. Called the newspaper and they will be making a free annoucement in the meeting section.

We also wish you success in getting the daylily club started. Thank you for taking the initiative to get it started. We are members of three daylily clubs. One we drive almost 21/2 hours to get to, another less than 45 minutes, and our "home club" only 15 minutes to the meeting place. Each club is different and has its own personality. Once we joined our first daylily club ? years ago, our interest and involvement in daylilies began to evolve. We are thankful that we have so many daylilies clubs within driving distance. Let us know how things go.

I spoke to the Extension service agent and she said that she will email an annoucement out to the Master Gardener's List. I am glad about that. I know that several of them grow lots of plants. I attended the class in 08.
I learned a lot, but connecting with other plant people is fun too. I am not current on the MG hrs now but it is a good program.

We have a lot of master gardeners come to our meetings/join our club. And we do some joint ventures with them, too. They've recently held an internet plant sale, and the purchasers are picking up their plants next weekend. They've asked us to come and sell daylilies to the folks who come to pick up their plants. Thumbs up

I loved the spring auction where people brought plants of all kinds. I got a really nice oriental lily tree that is now 8 feet high.

How many people attended? I spent a few months in your area last summer and I do believe you live in daylily heaven. Lovey dubby

Hi, Cindi
Sorry, I haven't been on ATPs most of the summer. We had 12 people to attend. Most belonged to other Bowling Green Garden clubs and for now we will be meeting just on occasion as daylily promoters. I do wish it could become more.

Did you get to see Daylily World and the Rices?
