Been thinking of trying my hand at making a cross or two when the irises bloom.

What would you choose for your crosses if you were to do a cross. Mine would be Blackbeard and Dream lover
2) Missouri mist with Muppet
3) Indian chief with pink lace.

I have a Bronze noid with brown veins. I would like to cross it with Sans Souci.
I started wondering what the vein color has to do with the flower color in a cross.
The limitation is that Sans Souci is diploid and has not been a prolific parent. I have no idea what the "ploid" of the Bronze is, most likely Tetra.

Ratchet, the bronze noid sounds nice. Overall I think it would be an interesting cross.

It is fun to research the development of modern Iris.
Now that the season has ended, it is time to make lists of Irises to acquire and time to learn more about the cultivation and propagation of Iris.
I toyed with hybridizing African Violets so I have a general idea of genetics.
And I have an Arilbred which is where I got the alert on diploid/tetraploid crosses.
There is much to learn and explore with Iris.

John & I did median crosses. He did one with the white I. aphylla & SDB seedlings resulting in a whitetish iris 'Quogue'.
Thumb of 2021-11-23/irisarian/ea5657 I thinkj that I found the aphylla under its seedling number in the garden & would like t o play with it & Quogue t o work on MDBs.

Iris Wiki: Pollen can remain viable for a week or more stored cool and dry. If it is frozen, it can often remain viable for over a year.
Basic Technique: Anthers can be harvested, dried for a few minutes, popped into a coin envelope and placed in the refrigerator for use within a few days; if not, the pollen can be put in the freezer for long term storage.

What are you hoping for in your Blackbeard and Dream Lover cross?
I would love to see someone use Muppet in their hybridizing. It would be nice to see its blending on Missouri Mist.

I would love to see Butterfly Affair crossed with something greenish too. There is one in the database that sounds interesting from the description but I cannot find any photos

I think dream lover and black beard would be an interesting cross and have some interesting child plants.

Here is the Noid. I see it as Bronze. That is because of the veining. It is my absolute favorite Iris of all time but beauty is in the eye of the beholder, aye? I would name it "Simply Elegant."
I want Brown/Bronze tailored Iris. Sans Souci is an optional parent.
Thumb of 2021-11-24/ratchet/f81a73
I would load an image for Sans Souci but I don't know how to do that from the Database.

Elsa - I have been dreaming about putting blue or purple beards on Diamond Necklace
.

I'd like to keep the Debbie Rairdon pattern, and thought Don't Stop Believing might be a good iris to cross it with.

They are about a week apart from blooming together. I wish I remembered to get some pollen from Diamond Necklace before it finished blooming.

I also want to create an iris like Circus Stripes with nice form and strong stems. I have not figured out which irises I need to achieve this.

Richard,
Pink Lace is beautiful! Crossing that with Indian Chief seems a very good idea.

Ratchet,

With Indian chief and pink lace, my hope with that one would be one that kinda like cats eye on the bottom. It would be the Burgandy center color with with pinkish peach type of border and that a broken, then a peachier pink and light purple strips on top.

A cat's eye Iris is possible, certainly. Hybrid Irises are amazingly versatile in range.
Except..geranium red.
A deep rose tailored self is certainly possible but I haven't seen one. A red-gold tailored self is possible but I haven't seen one.
That is my goal. That bronze has two colors that make it interesting to me, dusty rose and red-gold.
What can be crossed to obtain a rose and a gold, I am not certain, but I am researching the possibilities.
Happy Thanksgiving!
