I just started listening to Giuseppe Verdi's
Nabucco (1842). I've listened to other Verdi operas in the past, but this is a first listen to
Nabucco.
The opera is not a straightforward retelling of the stories about Nebuchadnezzar in the Bible-- the main character is a composite of Nebuchadnezzar II, Nabonidus, and Cyrus the Great. So it's fiction riffing off of Biblical themes. It was important to the original audience because they associated the condition of Italy with the Babylonian captivity of the Jews.
This version was recorded live in 2017 at the Metropolitan Opera, with James Levine directing and Placido Domingo in the lead role.
