My local supplier of bulk compost sells compost made entirely from yard waste - no food scraps. Is this a valuable compost for my raised bed vegetable gardens? It is certified organic.

Probably. Can you inspect it to check for obvious contaminants?

Just out of curiosity, who certifies yard waste compost?

For years our Ag. extension offices advised us not to use Mushroom compost, so I have never used it. Then a month or so back at a region 14 meeting one of the guest speakers was an Ag. extension agent and he said that now that are saying Mushroom compost is great stuff to use. They previously stated that Mushroom compost was high in salt content and very low in nutrients. Now they seem to be walking that statement back. My question is what changed? Did they actually perform tests on Mushroom compost to determine it was high in salt content and low in nutrients, did they change the test and discover it was actually great for the garden, did someone pay a fee to get the past advice change? Has the way Mushroom compost is made changed, what happened?
I did ask the Ag. agent and he said that he did not know.

Very good questions. Where would the salt come from?

Like someone else above, I have to wonder about the source of the salt they mention in the mushroom compost link. It isn't just created out of thin air. So, it either had to come from the medium or the spawn. Coming from the spawn doesn't make sense. So... What is that medium getting converted by the mycelium? I make a mushroom compost here out of nothing more than spent coffee grounds, poplar shavings, and oyster mushroom spawn. I just can't see how using mushroom compost would be an issue other than companies using our substrates.
Always looking for interesting plants for pollinators and food! Bonus points for highly, and pleasantly scented plants.
