Alice, have you tried leaving some test stems outside? I think some of those would be hardy @ your house, if you can provide quite a bit of sun but protection from too much rain. A covered spot with south exposure is perfect, if you happen to have a spot like that.

Part of the reason I liked that shot was because of the morning sun shining through the leaves which are also the newest ones. If you look at the photo below (same time & day) you'll see that the older lower leaves without the backlighting look bluer

Fantastic effect! It looks really great! When you notice the tips starting to look strange, a little stretched and question mark shape, that's the start of inflorescence.

What do you mean by "tips?" Leaf tips? Stalk tips? I don't see anything in the way of new growth except baby leaves

It looks like it might be ready. When you see this, it's the first stage of forming an inflorescence. Suddenly the two newest leaves jump out and point down.

I'll watch out for activity. Those will be going indoors shortly so will get reduced light. Is there a usual flowering season?

Yes, soon, and same here. Haven't set the date yet, but it is definitely cooler @ night recently. (Yay free weather, no heat or A/C needed!!!!) Next to an E, S, or W window should be enough to get some blooms. I usually do.

My back yard faces south but it has dogs.

My greenhouse faces south, it has rats that eat plants. It's a battle I can't win unless I cage the plants in hardware cloth cages. I do have hardware cloth.

My lot's back area faces south but it does have chickens and rain, so of all I think maybe the greenhouse is the best option. Right now it needs work, and it is an opaque roof so I might have to supply supplemental lighting.

You have a lot going on! So many variables to consider. Best luck with it!
