Alice, have you tried leaving some test stems outside? I think some of those would be hardy @ your house, if you can provide quite a bit of sun but protection from too much rain. A covered spot with south exposure is perfect, if you happen to have a spot like that.
My back yard faces south but it has dogs.
My greenhouse faces south, it has rats that eat plants. It's a battle I can't win unless I cage the plants in hardware cloth cages. I do have hardware cloth.
My lot's back area faces south but it does have chickens and rain, so of all I think maybe the greenhouse is the best option. Right now it needs work, and it is an opaque roof so I might have to supply supplemental lighting.
