Good πŸŒ„

Is Philodendron Micans rare? Others say it is, some say it is not. So which is which?

Thank you for the response 😊❀️

It is not rare, but the demand for it was high enough at one point that it was a little more difficult to get hold of.
I have found that coffee, tea, and rose can all agree on one thing... water everyday.

Micans is a common name for Velvet Leaf Philodendron (Philodendron hederaceum var. hederaceum) and it isn't really rare. It's been in and out of popularity for many years; I think grower production slows down when something newer and more favorable hits the market.

I grew a few of the "Micans" Philo's years ago and loved the soft, velvety leaves. They seem to be back in popularity nowadays but it surprises me at what is being charged for tiny little plants. I guess I'm showing my age but I remember the time when you could buy a 10 inch (or larger) hanging basket of Philo Micans for $8 to $10 bucks!

Yes, philio is becoming in demand, same with aglaonema, caladium & Calathea.😊 And the variegated monstera, pothos & homa😊. But, I love looking at these plants & would like to have them but Im not gonna dish out worth P5-50k just for plants. If it is a gift, I won't say no to that😊😁. Id rather use the money for the house😊

Micans used to be among the #1 most traded Philos, along with Camposporteanum. They were widely available in box stores. Like a lot of things, post 2008 recession, they fell out of the public eye when many of the plant producers abandoned 'niche' plants and focused on higher selling landscaoe plants that could be mass produced to sell thousands of units. Now the niche market plants are back, but not cheap unfortunately.

I know someone who lives in Central FL not far from Apopka who has mature camposporteanum growing 60 ft up trees. If he wanted to harvest some of it he could make a few $1000 easily. But he just leaves it and lets it grow

Yup, plants has become the trend, worldwide during the pandemicπŸ€”. Especially here, during the first few months if lockdown, people started planting again, which is good news😊, for the earth itself and for everyone, the bad news is, the plant pots become costly, including the black plastic for seedlings that you cannot get any, where I'm living. And the plants itself become so costly, even the ones that nobody bother to give a glance become the sought-after by everybody. So the pandemic has good news & a bad news.😁.

Well, let's focus on the good news, and that is planting, that even the youngsters(teenagers to be exact(?) are interested also.😊😊😊

I've never heard of (or seen) the Philodendron (Philodendron camposportoanum) and I love the shape of those leaves!
