Does anyone know the reason for the peculiar spelling of this name?

I haven't been able to find an explanation. Is "ruffels" the correct spelling for "ruffles" in some other language?

Dyslexic?

Found this interesting PDF about the hybridizer. http://www.heritagerosefoundation.org/4resources/Rosa%20Mund...

But on reading this book Onward and Upward in the Garden by Katherine S. White, (http://books.google.com/books?id=wlm9MTbstnsC&pg=PA82&lpg=PA...) I'm guessing that he liked to spell things wrong. For instance:

Oh, is Lafter part of that family too? No wonder. Hilarious!

I thought it was interesting that the Brownell family specified multiflora rootstock for grafting. The article laments the later choice of the "incompatible Dr. Huey rootstock."
