Hi, I am looking for some guidance. I purchased a large (6') Schefflera this spring and it loved being in its new home until a couple of months ago. It had previously added new growth but now its leaves are turning brown/black and falling off. The leaves are not drying out. They turn brown from the base of the leaflets, the brown then extends outward along each leaflet to the tip, and along the stem to the main stalk. The stem then detaches.
I have abstained from watering for several weeks - maybe a month - in case it was an issue of overwatering.
The plant does not get direct sunlight.
I'd say about 20% of the leaves have fallen off, and more are continuing to drop every few days.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, this plant is an integral part of my home at this point!
Thank you,
SU

Can you post a picture of the whole plant with the pot?

Where do you live?
How do you decide when to water?
Does the pot have drain holes? I'm guessing it does since you've had it so long, but you never know!
When you water does much come out of the bottom?
Have you fertilized it? If so, with what and how much/often?
How close to a window is it?
What direction does the window face?
Did something change before the leaves started dropping?
Could a household cleaning product have been spilled in it?
Is it just the tallest stem or is it all over?

It doesn't look like it has a pest. No critters seen and not typical response to pests. We'll get to the bottom of this or die trying!! Hilarious!

Thanks CPPgardener! Here is a photo of the whole plant, another closer up to show the (good?) condition about halfway up the plant, and one of the base. It was in this self-watering pot when I bought it, which has no drainage holes in the bottom - I've never relied on the self-watering part, just watered once every couple weeks. Responses to your questions:

Where do you live? Toronto, Canada

How do you decide when to water? When top inch of soil is dry.

Does the pot have drain holes? I'm guessing it does since you've had it so long, but you never know! No it does not! I don't know what is in the bottom of the pot. It's an IKEA pot the previous owner had it in.

When you water does much come out of the bottom? N/A

Have you fertilized it? If so, with what and how much/often? I did once in the middle of the summer with MiracleGro for indoor plants (blue crystals dissolved in water). I may have done that again this autumn but don't remember now.

How close to a window is it?
What direction does the window face? It's about 7 feet from the nearest window. Window faces roughly west. The plant doesn't really get direct sunlight though because of where it is in the corner of the room, not right in the path of the sunlight.

Did something change before the leaves started dropping?
Could a household cleaning product have been spilled in it? I don't think anything really changed but maybe the season. It was growing vigorously in the summer in this location. I did treat it for aphids shortly after buying it, with a low concentration of dish detergent in water, and thoroughly rinsed all the leaves after with wet cloths (or at least it seemed thorough to me).

Is it just the tallest stem or is it all over? Unfortunately it is affecting all the stems, not just the tallest one. It affects lower leaves and higher ones, too.

Thank you again!

Is there a drainage hole in that container? If not, it will not succeed long term.

I've used planters like that and it will survive. The key is to only water in the tube. Put enough water in to raise the indicator to the "full" level and then DO NOT add any water until it gets dry in the reservoir at the bottom. The way it's set up there is always an air space above the water in the reservoir AS LONG AS YOU ONLY FILL IT TO "full". Try that program and move it closer to the window until it perks up.

Thanks both! I will consider a new planter with a better drainage system and in the meantime will move it nearer the window and attempt to use the orange pipe system as CPPgardener suggested.

If anyone sees this post and has another idea, please let me know Smiling
