Well, the ones here are often seen growing on electric and telephone lines, in full sun. The ones I've brought home before I've put in a lot of light but no direct sun and they all died eventually. I was looking at the ones in the trees above my favorite coffee shop and they are in open leafed trees and usually near the crotch with at least partial sun. I may move this pile to an area with partial sun but open to the rain and see how that goes. The last few days it hasn't been an issue because while we have sunny mornings, it has rained every afternoon and evening for weeks.
A day without sunshine is like, you know, night.

Maybe 'dappled' would work best! And I'm supposing that dappled depends on your environment?

My Tillandsia aeranthos has set seed pods. I wonder how difficult it is to grow them from seed.
I am not going to try it anyway, but I'll keep some. Perhaps someone wants to give them a try.

My Tillandsia bandensis has opened its first blooms. They are tiny blue blooms but it has lots of flower buds that will open the next days.
I don't have a very good camera but here are some photos. *Blush*
I hope my son will take better photos with his camera.

Mine don't open up. Hmmm..........wonder why. It's nice and tropical up in the greenhouse. And it was nice out all summer here. Hard to believe that now, with the outside temp. at -21. And some wind on top of that. And I have to work this afternoon. At least I can go in warm grunge clothes. After all, it IS a sale barn. LOL

With our predicted lows (wind chill) of 7 F, then -4, and finally a balmy 10, I decided to pull a bunch of my Spanish moss from my oak trees and filled a large garbage bag with them. They are now sitting in my "orchid" greenhouse. This moss was transplanted from the Mississippi coastal region three years ago and has flourished. It was full of blooms this summer. I was not sure it would survive our frigid weather this week, so I am hedging my bets, knowing I will at least have the bag survive. I am in zone 8b. We may go back to being a zone 7 after this winter!

I came back to this post because some of the Tillandsia seeds were spread by the wind and many of them began to grow on the wire where it was hanging. I was surprised.

That's neat , Ceci.

By the way, my Spanish moss survived our horribly long, cold winter last year just fine. I moved all the rest of the Tillandsia inside the greenhouses though. These varieties are all much more cold-sensitive. We got down into the low teens several times and the low 20's/upper teens numerous times last winter.

Those types of airplant commonly grow on telephone and electric wires here, making the wires look all fuzzy. Cool that it did it on the fence wire too.

This is the plant I have in my garden

But my son went to the province of Formosa, in the North of Argentina, and saw this one growing in the wild.

I have to grow mine indoors due to the zone I live in, but here are a couple of pictures of mine. I started out with 10-11, but the only ones remaining are Medusa, Velutina, and 2-3 others. I lost about half of them. One of them did bloom this year, though, which was very exciting for me!

Many Tillandsia do very well under fluorescent lighting, but grown inside, you do need to mist them every few days to keep the humidity up and supply them some (light) moisture.
