I love this one, perhaps can get it next year. Have you seen Robin Middleton's--think that's his last name--Salvia Gallery? I clicked on the "P" letter and saw the large form of Salvia patens, quite incredible. I wonder when this will become available here in the U.S. Another spectacular one of his is Salvia splendens "Peach". The photo of this one is amazing to me. By the way, thanks for posting all your great photos, really love them. I have only one salvia now that our "burgundy" S, greggii died. It is Salvia guaranitica, and I love it and so do the hummers, it is their favorite. They will perch on a fence right where one of the bushes is growing; it's like they don't want to get too far away from it.

In our zone, Salvia patens must be grown as an annual.
I have seeds for "Blue Angel" and for a compact cultivar "Patio Deep Blue".
I am wondering (since it is late for starts) as to how well it works to save the roots?
And how many days of growth until roots can be harvested and stored?
I could start them in containers of course,--- and bring the containers into the house when fall frosts threaten.

Here is a link to an article that discusses this:

These grow quickly in the spring and summer. Don't be afraid to start them now. The seedlings are slow growers for the first 6 weeks or so, and then (when the first tuberous roots start to develop) take off.

So beautiful. Have some winter-sowed seedlings of those I can't wait to plant out soon.

Thank you for the information on seedling starts.
Your site information is very useful for those of us in colder zones
where we must carry them over in the house. Thanks again.
