Because glaring frustratedly doesn't seem to help.
I pot the tubers ( have loads of them) about now and they don't just grow. DO they need warmth? light? Eventually of course they go.. and go and go all summer outside and if in my other plants will multiply.

So what jump starts these guys?
Plant it and they will come.

Thanks, TIffany, I potted more into a clear cup so I can watch- maybe they do work on roots for a while.
Plant it and they will come.

Bulbs always work on roots first. I don't unpot mine in winter, just water them once in awhile to keep the bulbs from desiccating.

I planted all the extras outside in sheltered spots in my garden a couple years ago. They did so well, I put them all out. Smiling

People who see mine in the library think they are amazing! I have a lot outside at my house, also.
I scavenged these from a potted plant, and have a whole potted pot of them dormant as well.
Plant it and they will come.

I am one of those who do not take them out of the pot. I'd probably lose the little corms and find them again after it was too late, like I do with achimenes. The plant goes somewhat dormant when the days are short even in the pot, although they didn't go completely dormant this year. I have them in an east window now. They did go totally dormant in the pot when they were in a west window. It seems like I remember reading that light is a pretty big deal with them. And not just with the leaves closing up at night, either. The clear pot idea sounds interesting. After all, orchids are often in clear pots. Keep us posted!

Nice to hear your observations, hawkeye.
The clumps I have outside grow into a lot of sun and get nice and full. The library pot is wispy and barely blooms.
They seem rare as houseplants. I imagine they wouldn't transport well.
Plant it and they will come.

Maybe they're rare because people toss them after St. Patrick's Day. They certainly sell enough of them in March each year.

The potted one I have comes from a family funeral some years ago. I've thought about trying them outside, but just presumed they would need to be in the shade. Sally, it's good to know they tolerate full sun. Maybe I'll try transplanting a piece this spring.

You can see some popping up in the lambs ear here. I am not sure how mu ch cold they can take, you may have to replant each year.

as some guessed, I see in clear cup that they make thread like roots soon, this has been 10 days. . And.. my first pot has leaves. I guess I'm just so impatient- 4-5 weeks wasn't that long after all.
Plant it and they will come.

I keep mine in outside shade in summer and bring it for winter.
It sits in a westward facing window and seems to like it. It produces blooms most of the winter.
