My Phaius tankervilliae (Nun's Cap Orchid) is in full bloom. The only thing that would make this one better is if the blooms were fragrant!

Beautiful! I have a few, but none in bloom, and none have ever had that many blooms. Did you add it to the data base?

Carol: They are one of my favorites and I bet they are sure pretty growing on your property there in Hawaii! I like Phaius flavus too, different color than P. tankervilliae but very pretty. I can't remember where I took this photo of P. flavus:

YES! I just wish they were fragrant... (but then I STILL wish I were younger, thinner and 32 years old. Doesn't happen)!!!!

Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing I must admit that I've wished for that same thing (the fragrance) and also the thinner, younger thing. Whistling and I have to laugh because I distinctly remember my mother often making the following statement:

"Oh, if only I were 30 years younger and know what I know now!"

I just turned 65 a couple of weeks ago and I think it would be nice to be 35 again and know what I know now. Green Grin!

Oh my goodness, that is a beautiful and perfect setting for the Nun's Cap Orchids!! And, I like your idea of the horizontals for hanging Hoyas.

What's the pretty orange flowers peeking out?

This clump of Phaius grows in light shade but there are others growing strong in full sun!!!

That orange flower is an Impatiens that appeared as a natural cross in a friends' yard. He calls it Confetti. It grows like a weed, literally...I cut it and throw it on the ground, no soil over it, and it roots. It grows up to 4 - 5 feet tall. I am using them as a 'ground cover' to choke out weeds.... Here are the two forms....Thumb of 2013-03-24/AlohaHoya/7e2347

Thanks, Carol! Everything I've read on Phaius says bright, indirect sun, but if they can take full Hawaiian sun, they should take ours! Love those Impatiens!

Driving down the hill I noticed a whole slew of Phaius growing beside the road in full sun...but as they do grow in a clearing...they would not have full sun ALL day long (surrounded by tall skinny trees that give filtered shade when the sun is behind them. Also a relative humidity higher than 50%...frequent rains. HTH.

The frequent rains I can fake. The relative humidity, not so easy. AH well, I'll keep trying 'till it either bloom or dies.

Oh, to have nun's orchids growing wild on my property!

My Phaius really like the filtered shade under my oak trees. P. tankervilliae are almost over, but Phaius microburst 'Octoberfest' is going strong. The crosses have bigger flowers, it seems.
