Old thread...did you all know about this? I just read this today. This is why it's called 'Nun's Cap Orchid' . Peek inside the lip of your flower and you see a little nun, with eyes and everything! .


Here, I took her out of her protective habitat for a closer look.

That's very neat, and great photos, too Cheryl. I always thought the name came from the fact that the flower shape looks like the hat that Sally Field wore in the Flying Nun.

I'd never heard that either ... I too always heard that the common name was from the resemblance to a nun's religious headpiece.

My Nun's Cap Orchid (Calanthe tankervilleae) bloomed in March:
