Definitely looks like some grass to me, also.

Took your advice and pulled up the front clump--definitely grass. I can even see the seeds beginning to form.

When I get clumps from Oakes, I have also received bonus quack grass in there as well, on more than one occasion. Insidious stuff! You won't see it right away, but I do suggest dealing with it right away or you will have regrets. That may mean digging up your clump and separating down to single fans to make sure you remove all the stolons. It's really hard to get rid of once it gets established. This is one reason that the classic "DF" is good- it's harder for surprise pests of all sorts to hitch a ride.

We hope it's a different, non-spreading grass, as that is much simpler to eradicate. Investigate and see. Once it gets growing, quack grass will clump at its growing points and these are relatively easy to pull, but the subterranean spreading stolons are the devil. It doesn't have a thick bunch of roots in one spot like other grasses.

I like grassy foliage... when it isn't grass! *Blush*

Justine, I looked up quackgrass, and that is what it looks like. I pulled up the clump, and it all came up with the roots. I didn't see any thing else, but I will go back and check to make sure I got it all. Thanks for the warning.

I have a bunch of other weeds already that spread that way--when I moved here, I was very ignorant about trumpet vine, for example, and now it is popping up everywhere.

I battle quack grass, once established you can never be rid of it as far as I can tell. Even a tiny piece will grow and it roots really deep. I have pulled, dug, and even use chemicals. I have the grass-b-gone spray the only thing that works at all, even though I still have to keep on top of it. It is scattered around all over my property Sad

I don't think, as far as I can see from the picture, that it's quackgrass. Quackgrass has prominent auricles and a short ligule. That grass appears to have no auricles and a long ligule. Is there a W shape on the leaf blades where they bend?

I've already pulled up the clump and tossed it in the weed bucket to take to the dump. I am not sure how to answer your question. I just went and looked at it again, but it's all limp now.

I am going to end this discussion because it has taken over the Bitsy thread that Char so kindly linked to the Daylily of the Day thread on Bitsy. I do appreciate all the help people have given my in helping me realize that the grass was not part of my Bitsy plant. Thank You!

From today. Sorry this is not a great shot. I was holding the tape measure in one hand and taking the picture with the other.

I was trying to envision how a person could take a picture with one hand while measuring the height with the other. That takes some coordination, lol.

I remembered to measure the height of 'Bitsy' scapes. It has been blooming for a few days. I only measured a few scapes and only if they had opened at least one flower already. The tallest were 28", 27", 27", and 26". the shortest was 17".

I measured the height from the tip of the scape directly down to the ground. I did not measure the length of the scape.

After the picture I posted above, subsequent scapes on Bitsy have been taller. I measured one today (it's still blooming) that was 30". So the info I got from Oakes about scapes staying on the short side in warmer zones isn't bearing out.

I will decide later whether or not to move Bitsy from the front of the bed. Right now I am really enjoying the steady supply of blooms.

sooby said: 'Bitsy' is reported to have blackish scapes and dark sepal backs. Is that the case for everyone here?

@sooby I did not notice it last year, but this year I do see it. This is not a great shot, but the scapes and buds are dark-colored. I will check the sepal backs when Bitsy actually blooms.

P.S. The whitish spots on the foliage are from Liquid Fence, in case anyone was wondering.
