God has blessed us with another good crop of caladium bulbs!! These are without a doubt about as tropical a plant as you can get although you can enjoy them in the lower zones. Your season is just shorter!! There's a nice availability on quite a few varieties in Jumbo size and Bigger bulbs too!! The folks who live up North that enjoy caladiums would really benefit from planting Jumbo or even the Colossal size bulbs. First you wouldn't need as many as the bulbs just tend to have more vigor to them. You'll get lot's of leaves a little faster too and the leaves will get bigger a little faster too!!
I don't proclaim to know everything about these awesome plants but I know a little. If anyone ever has any questions about caladiums, Please don't hesitate to email me at: [email protected]
If I don't know the answer I'm pretty sure I can find out!!!

Happy Gardening!!
Bill
I tip my hat to you.

I've been a customer of Caladiums4less for a number of years and I can attest to the great bulbs that Bill's company provides. I just ordered again when he offered a special for NGA members in January and I look forward to my bulbs arriving so that I can get them planted! I'm in Florida and I love the pops of colorful Caladium leaves around my garden and in containers on my patio and porch.

For those in northern zones, Caladium bulbs can be planted in the garden and treated as single season annuals and they also look great in mixed container plantings as well as growing in hanging baskets!

In case you missed the current Caladiums4less classified ad, here's the link telling about the discount offer of 10 Jumbo Bulbs for $15.00, plus appropriate shipping determined by your zip code: The thread "Jumbo Caladium Bulbs - Outstanding Collection!!" in Classifieds and Group Buys forum

Remember, don't place your order on the website. To receive the discount, email Bill at [email protected] and let them know that your are an NGA/garden.org customer.

Here are photos from our database of the two Caladiums being offered. 'Red Flash' is one of my all time favorites and I think I need to order some of these jumbo bulbs!

Is my memory correct? Just a few years ago WM or L's would have a bag of 5 Caladium bulbs for about $8? Looking on WM website this morning since I needed other stuff and I never see the bulbs I want when I go in person, maybe they're available for a pickup order. I'm seeing basic Cals for $20+ for a bag of 3. These are not already-growing plants.

A few weeks ago Lin posted a notice from Caladiums 4 Less about shortages this year. Bill mentioned locally owned growers and a "big" grower. I believe Classic Caladiums is the big guy, this farm is owned by former UFL researchers who have partnered with Proven Winners in marketing their bulbs. A number of which are patented.
I got this notice from Classic recently.

"Caladium Bulb Shortage – Mother Nature Dominates
A memo from Classic's CEO, Dr. Robert Hartman:

The 2022 growing season was challenging for Florida Farmers to say the least. For caladium bulb producers specifically, the season started with a drought that lasted all summer. With the drought came several wind storms that tore our caladium leaves shredding them. Our June rains actually came in September which is much too late for the crop. The drought caused stand loss as many of the planted seed pieces perished. Then on September 28, Hurricane Ian hit (see picture, arrow points at our farm) followed by cool weather and then 6 weeks later Hurricane Nicole hit us (11/9/22). Combined, these environmental events had a devastating effect on the caladium crop leading to a severe bulb shortage.

Over the years Classic Caladiums, anticipating what Mother Nature could throw at us, has invested in many preemptive but costly mitigating measures. These measures include laser leveled fields (for better drainage), raised mulched production beds (to keep the crop above saturated soil caused by torrential hurricane rains), certified stock (assuring our customers the most vigorous varieties), long term, controlled release fertilizer (to provide continuous small dose feed regardless of whether events) and several irrigation systems for both overhead and in bed irrigation to aid in sprouting and growth should we experience a drought. Because of these investments we have a relative normal crop and therefore bulb supply.

Nevertheless, gardeners everywhere need to be aware that there is an overall extraordinary caladium bulb shortage this season. Therefore, to get the widest selection of varieties and bulb sizes, it would be prudent for gardeners to get their orders in early as possible and ask their supplier about their bulb supply as options are diminishing rapidly.

Hurricane Ian about Hardee County, where our caladium farm is located.
With that being said, we have caladium bulbs, but they are going quickly. Make sure to place your order before our spring peak."

With such shortages out there the bulbs will be pricier this year. I pre ordered jumbo bulbs last fall, prior to the hurricanes. They were about $3.00 a piece back then.

Thank you! It sounds like all Caladium bulbs in the US come from FL. I was aware of the hurricane damages, so if that was the entire supply, that would explain the price hike. I was mostly just curious if I was remembering right. It's possible the prices were already up for a few years because I haven't seen any Cals for a few yrs. No idea if it's because there were not any @ stores, or just my timing. I so rarely go where plants are sold.

Bulbs
Hey Guys,
Sorry I haven't been on here in awhile but I guess everyone knows why now!!
It's a TOUGH YEAR!! I brought in EVERY BULB I'm getting for the season on Thursday and it's not many!! There's about 30,000 bulbs total. That might sound like a lot but trust me, it's a fraction of what I need!!
I have a joke where I say, "It's Mother Nature, Not Father nature and she Can Be unpredictable". The day I lose that JOKE, I've lost it all.. I Can't cry anymore so let's laugh and make the Best of it!!
I have a few more bulbs than what you see on my website but not many
Hurricanes Suck!! So does drought but I myself am about tired of hurricanes!!
Oh well... I hope everyone's OK!!!

Bill, I live on a barrier island and my caladiums went down this year with the cold. What has totally amazed me, is that they appeared about 3 or 4 weeks ago with MASSIVE clumps. With all the rain late last year, I think the mother bulb grew and then split into pieces because the clumps are 2 ft across with inner leaves bigger than outer leaves, right now. I'm sure they will be uniform in a short while.
Its going to be fun watching these caladiums putting on a wonderful show!!!

The first one doesn't look any different yet but the 2nd one is about to open the first leaf. I can't believe out of all the winters when Caladiums didn't survive, these chose to stay alive over the especially long and harsh winter. The area where they are is under the porch roof, so rain splashes there but doesn't hit directly. I suspect the more-dry-while-cold condition had something to do with it. Maybe like so many marginally hardy plants that can be finagled into surviving if they don't get soggy while cold.

Time to move the little snips I put there. This Cal needs room to spread her wings!
