One of our hives swarmed yesterday and we were lucky enough to be right there. They settled on a tree branch right in front of another hive so my son simply held the branch while DH cut it, then shook them right into an empty hive . I have video but i don't know how to upload.

If you can post the video to youtube, you can then embed it here using a special bb code tag that I created for that purpose.

The hive that swarmed: were some bees left behind? I've read that it would now be a greatly weakened hive.

Usually when a hive swarms the old queen takes half of the colony with her and leaves half with the new queen. I'm not sure that happens every time but unless there was a problem in the hive that cause the swarm there will always be enough bees left behind to build the hive back up.
What you lose with a swarm is honey production because the swarm eats honey to fuel their move to a new home and if you catch that swarm they are busy settling in their new home instead of making extra honey.

I have never tried to post to youtube but maybe some day I will. I'll play around with it. I was on my iPad and I find it a bit clumsy for some tasks. Thanks for the info!

I'm pretty sure the old hive is fine, just like Mindy said though, no spring honey from it. The same thing with the hive at my house. No honey this spring but still enough bees.

You can see the video of them getting the swarm here:

After this he just shook the branch twice and the bees all went into the new hive. For some reason i did ot get video of this part. Shrug!

Wow Arlene.
The problem is that when you are young your life it is ruined by your parents. When you are older it is ruined by your children.
