When planting large shrubs, or several at one time, use a post hole digger to dig your holes. It speeds up planting time and makes digging easier.

My FIL loves his post hole digger for making planting holes.. in sandy loam. I think it would take more oomph than I could manage to get it down into our clay, even where I've amended it. On occasion, though, I've been tempted to rent a powered post hole digger and make a hundred planting holes everywhere I thought there might be an available spot, then spend the rest of the season filling them with plants. LOL
