So cute! If you can avoid the urge to guide the tips over the edge until there's no more room on the soil surface, your plant will have many different points where it has rooted into the soil, and be much less easy to kill.

Thanks for the tip!
Makes sense.

If that's the case, I would think planting lower in a pot so there's a good 1" lip might be helpful.

I keep coming out in the morning to split peas damnit!
The snails are getting them on nights I forget to move it out of the way (front porch).

I'm out of sharp sand, wonder if crushed coral would have the same affect as a deterrent in a large tray under the plant.

Stepped out onto the porch just now...and a snail.

Moved the peas a few hours ago but looked at its daytime spot...snail.

Pulled 6 from my old jade, but she's used to it.
Stem is about the size of a 12oz can.

It'd probably be shocking to set up a camera and watch a time lapse video of all the snails roaming around every night. Maybe some snail bait somewhere to knock the numbers down?
Plant it and they will come.

Hmmm, I do have a PetCube cam I'm not using. It's actually quite doable.
I'd have to be pretty bored to follow through though.

TONS of snails, and for the first time in years for some reason, lots of banana slugs!

I don't want to use pesticide bait since so many things eat snails.
Beer traps work well but it'd be like a finger in a dike.

As far as banana slugs vs. plants goes consider this:

No wonder the peas are mangled/disappearing!

Not to mention the damn snails.

I find giant black slugs in my pots sometimes. That's not fair!

For plants that dangle over the side, I try to have the soil as close to the top as possible, so stems don't have so much stress at the rim. That's usually the spot where stems get damaged.

That has helped, thank you:)

Looking back at my 1" lip comment, I was thinking more of how to curb their growth over the edge and give them more time to stay and populate the interior.

She's done well.
New spot with full western exposure most of the day, loves it.

I have several strings that have crawled over the edge with 6-10 "pearls"....no more peas!
Nothing to crow about but I'm happy.

Pictures soon.

Wrong time of year but propagation looks pretty straightforward, any tips appreciated.

Thanks!

I've always had problems with them when the stems get real long and wind cuts them at the lip of the pot. Same with String of Hearts. That the winds are Santa Ana's doesn't help. They make really interesting ground-covers in pots.

Sounds great! You could look for adventitious roots to decide where to cut. Or you could put another pot directly adjacent and let the existing stems crawl over to the other pot and take root while still connected. When ready, cut the ties.

Was going to do cuttings, still will to see how it goes. Once you mentioned the obvious I decided I wasn't the only one who saw potential with this method. Thanks!

and having plenty of the pots that fit them. We have a place with an old-school mentality that includes being really customer oriented, and offering used pots of all sizes really cheap. This size is 10 cents each. It's nice to have pots grouped securely and efficiently.
Plant it and they will come.
