Martagon lilies are my "forget to buy" plant.
I finally bought one small root,
but now I find that they are more often sold in the fall here.
I do have a few seedlings-I hope.

I have always wanted a Magnolia grandiflora.
But it's either too darn expensive... or too small... and well, they say they need protection when really young. PLUS they grow slowly...so year after year my garden fails to exhibit an M. grandiflora.

Really? I dug up a 6" (maybe) seedling from a friend's yard and transplanted it to mine in fall 2009. It's now 6ft tall, or almost. Now, I can't guarantee 100% that it's a grandiflora, but I can tell you that her yard used to be woods before the subdivision was built there in the 70s, and there are large native magnolias all over the place. Given that we're in GA, given the height of her trees and the size of the flowers, I'm assuming it's a grandiflora. Shrug!

Well, one thing, these are supposed to be evergreens. Keeping their leaves all through winter.

Mine's evergreen, and has never had any special protection. I only plant things that can survive neglect. Hilarious! Of course, I'm in zone 7b, not 6b. But I would say if you really want one, go ahead and buy a small one. You might have to grow it in a container for the first year and then transplant it, but it would be worth it to have a tree you love. Thumbs up

Calin, this is my magnolia shortly after I planted her in 2010:
Thumb of 2013-04-24/fiwit/d0000a

Same tree in May 2011.
Thumb of 2013-04-24/fiwit/e78e21

Same tree in August 2011
Thumb of 2013-04-24/fiwit/20a6f1

And in March 2013
Thumb of 2013-04-24/fiwit/3e41fa

Remember though, I'm zone 7b. HOWEVER, I planted her in Georgia clay, and do not fertilize other than sometimes burying kitchen scraps in various spots in the bed. So what she's achieved, she's accomplished on her own. Thumbs up

Such a cute one. And the shape is very nice.
You convinced me. I will have a look at the nurseries around.
Zones sometimes aren't that relevant. I am not sure about it anymore. Two winters back it was really cold, last winter not so.
I guess it would need some protection for the first couple winters.
Will let you know if I do get one Smiling

I realize that Romania will be colder than the Atlanta area, but Jan 2011 was the year we had five inches of snow that stayed on the ground for a week because it never got above freezing that week. The little magnolia did just fine. It's been snowed on several times while it was a very young tree. But our cold snaps are only a week at a time, usually, and I don't know that we've ever gotten into the single digits (Farenheit) while I've lived here. But it's done fine with 18F temps.

I hope you do get one - I smile every time I look at her, and can't wait until she's big and majestic. Thumbs up

I'm assuming it's grandiflora, because all the magnolias on my friend's property are the standard huge magnolias with gorgeous large blooms that you think of when you think of magnolia trees and the US deep south. But this was a seedling from one essentially growing wild (part of their property is undeveloped), so who really knows?

Aha, but I thought even M. grandiflora has a few cultivars...
