I got this QF Nohea before the other one QF Leina' Ala (in the profile picture) which I had bought as Phrag Karen Sue until I found out it was the wrong plant. This one seemed rather old, and it was not giving me any new growths at the bottom. I am supposing the person who sold it to me could not get it to do anything. Anyway, last week I noticed the start of a spike, and I see some bulging under the first leaf which might indicate a growth or two developing. Now I will be able to see if Nohea is greener or pinker. We shall see. Pictures!

ps. The grotty black stuff on the top of the medium is algea on the rock wool I lay on top to keep the base moist. It needs to be changed out.

I purchased this sight unseen and was hoping for a really pink one. I was disappointed at first but it grew on me. I think I'll keep it a while longer.

I like the green ones too. Would love to get a big green floppy one like "Stairway To Heaven." I have "Paul Eugene Conroy" but it is a few years from spiking.

Since I bought the two new phrags, I have 2 more plants starting their spikes. So Nohea is definitely in spike, the spike is now about 6 inches long. The Trojan Treasure is in spike-- it is a division and has bloomed before so I am not surprised. it is just the top part of the "spike leaf" before the bug gets fat and round. The little Waunakee Sunset "Cherry" has 2 spikes. CA saw one and said it had one spike but a day or two after I got it, I saw another peeking out in another growth. CA told me that it is an unusually floriferous plant. I feel really privileged to have one of his own hybrids from his own collection! Wow, blown away!

(I only wish my Avalon Druid would finally give me a spike).

Certainly feels good though doesn't it?!

Well some Phrags can bloom anytime while others have a prime blooming season. I only became a Phrag. nut 3 years ago and I have noticed that I see more spikes from September through February then the other months.
But so much depends upon parentage. If you cross a summer bloomer with a summer bloomer, then it should bloom in the summer. But cross a late Spring bloomer with an early Fall bloomer and it could bloom anytime.
