I planted a laburnum in 2012 in recognition of Queen Elizabeth's 60th anniversary of succession.
It has grown well but in recent years it has only flowered every other year. This year it seems to be one of the non-flowering years, after a glorious show last year.
Whilst looking it over today, I notice that there were three laburnum seedlings growing out of the wall that fronts the bed in which the laburnum is situated. They are about 3 inches tall and each has three racemes of flowers.
Is this a normal feature of laburnum trees? I can understand the seedlings but to see them flowering so prolifically in their first year seems amazing.

Fascinating! Are you sure they are seedlings and not root runners from the parent?
