No, they're just a dark green and eventually turn brown and fall off. But in the early spring they have really pretty yellow catkins.

They are awesome though. I can't wait until mine grows like yours! I think they would be a great Halloween decoration.

They would be Clint. I like to cut the curly branches too and use them for plant supports.

I have had this plant for about 2 years. The catkins are a pink beige but they are over with this year. Here is the emerging leaves.
seems to be just as contorted as the green one.

Spring both trees look so cool! When you all were saying "red" I wasn't thinking maroon! It looks almost purple!! Very striking!

Thanks for the pics Julia. That really is a beautiful color! I've heard conflicting opinions about removing the suckers from these. Julia, on your green one it looks like you leave them. I used to, but finally starting cutting them out and it made my original plant grow much stronger. Clint, do you know what you Dad does with suckers?

They are very cool looking Spring, there's something so visually pleasing about the randomness of the shape of the branches. Lovey dubby

Chris - the ones my dad has aren't grafted so he doesn't have trouble out of suckers. I agree

I cut the suckers every spring, I just haven't been up there yet. If you don't cut the suckers off they take over, very aggressive. Later in the season I will try to get a picture, the leaves turn more of a green/red. I was surprised how big the green one is getting. Whistling

My plant wasn't grafted and the suckers look just like the parent, but I prefer to remove them anyway. Don't those suckers grow fast Julia? I'm always surprised at the number of them every spring.

They are cool Greg!
