Hi guys. I am worried my maple might have root rot? I have never dealt with it before so not sure. Here are the pictures. The foliage looks fine but there are brown mushy roots present. Any help will be appreciated.

How long does it take from the beginning of root rot to when the foliage shows symptoms. Thanks.

Also, is it safe to put a maple into the ground from a container during summer? I have a couple of root bound maples.

Thanks and I look forward to your replies.

Hi John
Those roots look quite healthy to me. Those nice white root stems are thriving and everything looks OK. As far as planting into the ground now? That would be fine. Just don't pull or break up the root structure at all this time of the year while the foilage is out and the tree is actively growing.
Also make sure you place it in the garden in an area with well draining soil and your amount of sun exposure is suitable for the variety you have.

Thanks for the reply. I was wondering if you could give your opinion on the question of how long it would take for symptoms to show on the foliage if root rot started today? And how quickly symptoms would take to become severe? Much appreciated thanks!

As far as symptoms are concerned, that would be hard to determine as there are many variances going on. Generally, if you are concerned about root rot, prolonged "wet feet" would be your biggest factor. You would start seeing a sickly looking tree with a slight wilt to your shoots and leaves. That can take a while to occur depending on the stress level.
Proper care can reverse the issue as well. Japanese maples are very resilient and can withstand alot.
