You are making an assumption that the seller knows what the Holy Tuesday they are doing when it comes to orchids.
That could be nothing more then inexperience.
For example: a seller is offering a RARE PHALAENOPSIS SPECIES for $99 on e-bay!!! It is clearly, both by name and by flower, a hybrid. I just contacted them politely and said that it was a hybrid. Pretty enough but a hybrid.
I did not hear back. I do not know why. Perhaps they wanted $99 no matter what. ( My Dad used to say, people like that felt "My mind is made up, don't confuse me with the facts!!!)
But here is another, another vendor is selling a rare species of Phalaenopsis for like 70-80 bucks. They list the parentage in the description, yet call it a species!! That could be just plain STUPIDITY!!!!
I think that they hope that 'species' and 'rare' means more money.
