Does iris rhizome size count? Does the size of the iris rhizome matter? There are many different opinions on the subject. I hope this short tutorial will shed some light on the subject for you.

I purchased some irises last year & planted them with all of other irises I ordered. I got in like 50 different irises from all over the place. One particular set, I can't remember where I got them from but I know they were pretty cheap, sent me basically just green leaves with a teensy piece of rhizome attached, about the size of a quarter. It was like they trimmed the green off the rhizome & sent me the trimmings rather than the rhizome. All of my irises everywhere are showing signs of life (new green). These ones are still brown & dead. Did I waste my money? I wish I could remember where I bought them from because I am NOT happy with what I got compared to a lot of others I ordered!

Without a photo it is hard to determine what you got exactly. This time of the year, another month? you should start noticing growth on the iris, so pretty soon you should know. It is possible that you got a miniature iris. I had some of these once and the rhizome is small, of course so are the leaves. I have had iris though that I dug out trying to get rid of or move and even little pieces of it grew back, they are tough!
