I have 2 questions about my indoor bird of paradise plant.

1.) I have a soil moisture meter and not sure how far to stick it into the soil? Not sure when I should water it?

2.) I have a new leaf uncurling but it looks like it has a big brown/black spot on it. Should I leave it alone?
