I figure maybe 1-1 1/2" sections and any accompanying roots?

I would assume individual "peas" have potential to root, or no? I find them knocked loose frequently, something's sniffing at them at night I think.

I cut mine as long as I can and then wind the strand around the top of the soil in a pot with well-draining soil. Individual "pearls" can root, but I find they take longer than using a string. I also put a tiny amount of soil over the string part to help keep it in place and to give it more opportunities to root.
When I'm starting new strings, I spray them with a mister to wet the soil rather than pour water over it. Misting once a day to keep the soil damp but not thoroughly wet. Then I place them where they get bright light, but no direct sun, until they get established.
Cutting them shorter will work fine.
This is just what works for me.

Thanks!

Not a lot to work with, hoping to start a few for coworkers and guessing at the minimal length I can get away with!

Planning to lay them in the slightest trench with a bit of soil, right on. Have also grown very fond of bent paper clips as big gentle soil staples. Needle nose pliers are perfect for cranking them out easily and safely.

I used to cut them in half for 2 narrow staples, now I just use the whole damn thing after mangling it and tweaking to size.

Also yes on the spraying, especially in situations in which regular watering could displace soil that you've placed for a reason.

Works great for my succulents leaves.
