Golden zucchini split before maturity. Why is that?

That's odd. Was it dry then suddenly very wet?
Plus they aren't shaped nicely.
What is your location, please?
Growing in ground, containers, raised bed..?
Plant it and they will come.

I am in zone 7D, Virginia. I'm growing zucchini in a raised bed. I water every day or so if there's no rain. I try to keep it moist but not overly wet and not dried out. Yes, the shape is odd. Other zucchini shapes on the same vine were perfect.

I've never had my zucchini crack like that (and don't know what would cause it), but I think the odd shapes are due to incomplete pollination.

I agree with Sally. At some critical point in development the fruit took up excess water and split from expanding too fast. That shape is usually a result of incomplete pollination. If the other fruits are fine it just means some bees didn't do a complete job on those two.

Both happen occasionally and aren't issues of concern unless they keep recurring.

I agree with Sandy, too.

Thanks, Everyone, or this helpful information. I had wondered about excess water, but dismissed it. Because of the heat, I regularly check soil moisture with a meter and only water when moisture is on the low side in the green section. But, I will be more careful of the amount when I do water.

This is great. Thanks, again!
