…fleshy and often brightly colored leaves that form compact rosettes of foliage. Blooms appear on short stalks [cymes]. The genus is native to semi-desert regions in Mexico, Central America and northwestern South America.
Often the original plant will produce large numbers of offsets, giving rise to the expression "hen & chicks"… a common name used with several other genera.
Species tend to be more hardy than hybrids. All will tolerate shade and some frost. They can be easily propagated by offsets.
