inherited my dad's house. 30 years ago we ripped out an entire front yard of 40 year old juniper bushes. the nasty prickle kind. nothing grows where they were. i've done soil amendments, i compost and put it in the beds, every other part of the yard looks great. wondering what to do.

Hi & welcome! Are you able to add a pic of the area? Is there plastic there?

What have you tried planting?

I hadn't heard of juniper allelopathy, so I did a search.

Seems like if you've limited your efforts to scattering grass seed... Well, that wouldn't grow.

From my reading, I'd suggest figuring out some nice perennial plants to grow there...

Or plant some trees.

all sorts of stuff. i'm big into native perennials and i've tried two roses, there's a small willow shrub, some irises.. butterfly bush is ok. mostly everything else is limping along and the rest of the yard looks awesome. we had a butternut tree over that part for many years as well.

Butternut = Juglans.

My pleasure! The juglone should dissipate after a few years. Compost will help keep up the microbiological processes so the roots can decompose as quickly as possible. If there's something on the standard "juglone tolerant" list that is of interest, maybe your search for something could come to an end sooner.
