Was at a botanical garden yesterday and these were everywhere as landscaping, as opposed to specimens, and not a single ID tag could I find! A miscanthus variety? They were beautiful in their feathery fall colors and we haven't had snow to smush them down yet.

And these, not quite the same. It was nearly seven feet tall. Frank?

Yes, they both look like Miscanthus, they do get big. No guess on the cultivar names...

Miscanthus sinensis 'Gracillimus' WW45 Miscan G4- (Heirloom) Maiden Grass Miscan, Mature plant size: 5x4ft, narrow green leaves with a silver midrib, USDA Hardiness Zone 5, Michigan Bloom Month -, In Garden Bed G4 for 16 MONTHS (Menards). Planted in 2021.

Missouri Botanical Garden: 'Gracillimus', known as maiden grass, is noted for its narrow green leaves with a silver midrib which form a substantial, rounded, arching clump of foliage typically growing 4-6' tall (to 8' when in flower). Foliage turns yellowish after frost, but quickly fades to straw-beige by winter. Tiny reddish-copper flowers appear in tassel-like inflorescences above the foliage in late September, gradually turning into silvery white plumes as the seeds mature. Blooms later than most Miscanthus cultivars. Flower plumes persist well into winter providing good winter interest. 'Gracillimus' is an old and very popular cultivar.

Miscanthus sinensis 'Zebrinus' 22W47 Miscan S1- (Ornamental Grass) Maiden Grass Miscan, Mature plant size: 5x4ft., zebra-striped leaves, USDA Hardiness Zone 5, Michigan Bloom Week ISO WW40, In Garden Bed S1 for 25.6 YEARS (Meijer). Planted in 1997.

Dark green leaves with zebra-striped, gold-yellow bands extending horizontally across the leaves. Tiny pink copper-tinted flowers appear in late summer. The stripes tend to burn in full sun. Torched 2018, 2019, 2021. Grows much better when burned in early spring or winter.

Missouri Botanical Garden: 'Zebrinus', knows as zebra grass, is a clump-forming grass noted for its horizontally banded foliage which is reminiscent of both the popular M. s. 'Strictus' and M. s. 'Puenktchen'. However, 'Zebrinus' clumps are rounded, tend to flop and often need support, whereas 'Strictus' and 'Puenktchen' both feature spiky, upright leaf blades in narrower clumps which usually do not need staking. 'Zebrinus' typically forms a substantial foliage clump to 4-6' tall, however it sends up flower stalks to 2' above the foliage clump, thus bringing the total height of the grass to 6-8' tall when in flower. Features dark green leaves with zebra-striped, golden yellow bands extending horizontally across the leaves at irregular intervals. Foliage gradually fades to tan after frost. Tiny pink/copper-tinted flowers appear in tassel-like inflorescences above the foliage in late summer, gradually turning into silvery white plumes in fall. Flower plumes persist well into winter providing good winter interest.

I love the way the light shines through the plumes.
A little out of season but I came across a photo I took late this summer at a nursery that looks like a combination picture of the Feather Carexes with a variegated New Guinea impatiens. I do like the salmon and white forms of this impatiens. Might copy this.

I luv carex plants so many variables they can be used. I have mine in the pond for years in floating pots. They are so good don't outgrow the area or take over anything around it. A very good beauty, polite and hardy.

I agree. Nice to have the pond conditions for some of those moisture loving plants. I am considering one but haven't settled on anything yet.

You would love a pond. They are a delight once fish added it's a whole different world. Once there set and balanced they are easy care. Just imagine all the new water plants you can explore. I tip my hat to you.

Miscanthus sinensis 'Little Zebra' 22W47 Miscan F2- (Thomas Walsh, Nunica, MI) Dwarf Maiden Grass Miscan, Mature plant size: 4x4ft, horizontally-banded foliage and wine-purple flower plumes, USDA Hardiness Zone 5, Michigan Bloom Month -, In Garden Bed F2 for 16 MONTHS (Lowes). Planted in 2021.

Missouri Botanical Garden: 'Little Zebra', sometimes commonly called dwarf zebra grass, is a compact cultivar that typically grows in a clump to 3-4' tall and to 2-3' wide. It is noted for its compact size, upright form, horizontally-banded foliage and wine-purple flower plumes. Leaf blades feature, at irregular intervals, distinctive horizontal yellow bands (to 1" in height) that retain good coloration throughout the growing season. Flowers appear in corymbose panicles of 10-13 racemes (each to 6" long) above the foliage in late summer. Tiny flowers emerge gray-purple with the plumes having an overall wine-purple coloration. As seeds begin to form, the flower/seed plumes fade to creamy tan, often providing some winter interest. Foliage fades to tan after frost. U.S. Plant Patent PP13,008 issued September 24, 2002.

Peony croaked in this spot. 2022 note: fast grower.

I put some golden sweet flag near a stream in my backyard [also some black mondo grass]. It has really filled out since this pic and looks great especially in winter when all other color is gone.

Planted this year, so it did not reach the expected 3 feet. I do like fountain grass:)

Pennisetum alopecuroides 'Hush Puppy' 23W39 Fountain Grass T4- (Wayne Hanna) Fountain Grass, Mature plant size: 3ft, Long-lasting pink plumes, USDA Hardiness Zone 5-9, Michigan Bloom Month -, In Garden Bed T4 for 139 DAYS (Bluestone). Planted in 2023.

Bluestone Perennials: Long-lasting pink plumes shoot skyward atop a neat mound of slender foliage blades. Due to its lack of seed production, plumes are produced for a long-lasting show from mid-summer into late fall. Its vigorous yet petite habit provides nice texture and contrast in container plantings. Pennisetum Hush Puppy is beautiful planted in sweeping masses or also shines as a specimen plant. Perfect for full-sun borders. The seed heads can be used as a lovely addition to fresh and dried flower arrangements. Another stellar Fountain Grass developed by Wayne Hanna at the University of Georgia.

This one would require a very large mower:)

Miscanthus sinensis 'Adagio' 23W40 Miscan R2- (Kurt Bluemel) Dwarf Maiden Grass Miscan, Mature plant size: 4x4ft,, narrow, silver-gray blades which turn yellow in fall., USDA Hardiness Zone 5, Michigan Bloom Week ISO WW40, In Garden Bed R2 for 26 MONTHS (Lowes). Planted in 2021.

Missouri Botanical Garden:'Adagio' is a dwarf eulalia grass cultivar which is one of the shortest of the many Miscanthus cultivars available in commerce today, typically growing 3 to 4 feet tall (5 feet in bloom.) It is an upright, warm season, clump-forming ornamental grass which features extremely narrow, silver-gray blades which turn yellow in fall. Tiny pink-tinged flowers appear in tassel-like inflorescences above the foliage in late summer, gradually turning into creamy white plumes by fall as the seeds mature. Foliage and flower plumes persist well into winter providing good winter interest.

2023 note: a dwarf, but it takes up a considerable amount of room in the bgarden. A very strong grower, certainly at full size in the second year. An attractive plant.

If you plant them away from woody plants, they make great winter fun:) Plus, they always grow better when burned. Not an option for the urban setting:)

Miscanthus sinensis 'Zebrinus' 23W42 Miscan S1- (Ornamental Grass) Maiden Grass Miscan, Mature plant size: 5x4ft., zebra-striped leaves, USDA Hardiness Zone 5, Michigan Bloom Week ISO WW40, In Garden Bed S1 for 26.5 YEARS (Meijer).
