Thread OP

Hi forum,
I have a Delonix Regia aka flame tree that I grew from a seed pod which I took home from holidays in Australia 10 yrs ago.
I sowed the tree in Feb 2021 and to this day, it grows like a weed. I live in zone 7a, so the tree is inside for the winter, where it keeps its leaves but slows down growing.
The tree has now a trunk of about 1cm and is about 60cm tall. But it does not branch! so I wonder. Can I chop off the entire "head" to force it to branch?
Just for fun, I sowed another seed from the same seed pod last week. And today I saw that it germinates! what is the earliest time I can prune it? It would be awesome if my indoor delonix regia tree would form this typical umbrella like canopy. How could I achieve this?

I don't know this particular tree but baby trees in general are usually a few years old before they start branching. You can try to force the issue by trimming the leader. It doesn't need to be drastic, just remove the tip where the newest leaf is growing.
The golden rule: Do to others only that which you would have done to you.

The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago. The 2nd best time is now. (-Unknown)

Flambouyant Tree, Royal Poinciana, Delonix regia....one of the best and easiest grown of the tropical flowering trees. The only one I would really rather have is Amherstia nobilis. I have collected seed when in South Florida and germinated several. I currently have one that is 7 ft tall but still an infant. They tale a while to actually develop the crown. You should try tip pruning before you behead your tree. I am in 9A and also cannot grow mine outside year round. I am getting ready to repot it into a 20 gallon container and put it into a permanent spot inside my greenhouse. I have seen many many specimens of this tree in So FL on the medians in neighborhoods that are only about 10-12 ft tall but have a hugely spreading crown. I think it is one you can control by pruning but maybe not severely?
