Bob, I think one needs to install Kindle for PC on their PC first to be able to open Kindle books. I have done that in the past and I have several Kindle books.
If at first you don't succeed, call it version 1.0
Keep smiling, it makes people wonder what you've been up to.
My "bunnies" are in fact Guinea pigs. 5 of them so far.

Will try this, when I return from work. Bob, I wasn't "claiming" that I couldn't open the file; I could not open it, and did receive the "cannot open file" msg. (Maybe I'm just being sensitive here, but that does seem an unfortunate phrasing in your post...or maybe I'm mistaking your meaning, here, but I have no reason or desire to make untrue statements, life's too short for engaging in drama...) And yes, it's entirely possible that the issue is with my Kindle; my Kindle was recently replaced, but under Kindle's warranty, they don't have to give you a new Kindle as a replacement, they can give you a refurbished/repaired one.
I was able to read the file in my Kindle browser, using the HTML option, and will hopefully be able to do the same with the actual book download, (I hope), if I'm unable to resolve the issue I'm having w. the Mobi file. Will see when I get home tonight. Thank you for your assistance, and if the difficulty lies with my Kindle, then I will request a replacement Kindle............for my replacement!
Thank you too, Mima, will look into this when I get home, but it's no big deal, I can read the sample as I described, and won't be able to download the full version 'til payday, anyway:) Will update on the situation, as it resolves itself.

Will do that, Bob, and again, thanks for your assistance and advice. Will download the Kindle for PC app in the morning. Will be getting the full version on Fri., (payday), since I loaned out my hard copy. Will let you know Friday, how it went.

Quick update:
Bob, your book is now on my PC, my Kindle, and in my Cloud drive, thank you (and Mima) both.
I didn't wait til Friday...:)
And the issue wasn't with my Kindle, but with my router (wireless), it seems.
Techie issues just make me want to pull my hair out, sometimes. Rolling my eyes.

It seems you've figured it out by yourself. Enjoy!

Me, too. Wouldn't have been able to do it without trying the options you both presented, however, so -Thank you! Now I've an excellent take -along reference, much handier than schlepping a book around...!
