Helllo! We recently removed a mature oak tree from our backyard in coastal Southern California. It is now incredibly hot out there. We want new shade as soon as possible (maybe to the left of the stump, outside the border?) but NOT any oak variety. The oak tree we removed hosted death cap mushrooms, and we have a dog who already barely survived eating one. That's why we haven't watered in months.

Native plant suggestions seem to turn up California Sycamore or Velvet Ash, both of which I think might be too big for the space.

We are looking for fast growth and filtered light, not a super dense canopy of shade. It would be fantastic if we could find a tree that doesn't drop a ton of litter, or only drops in the fall and not year-round. And any fruit or seeds that drop need to be nontoxic to dogs.

Suggestions?
