Hi please can I get some advice on my lilac tree. It has always flowered and looked healthy, this year the leaves gradually started turning brown, now they are shrivelled brown leaves, it did flower but they where quite poor. Is there anything I can do to revive the tree? The tree is prob 30yrs old it was my late fathers garden which I have just taken over he never used to do anything to the tree just a prune every now and then if it got to big he wasn't a fan of cutting things down! Thanks.

Welcome Ann42!! Did you have high temps? You can strip the leaves off and they will return. You should reshape the trees only after they are done blooming. If you
cut now you will not have blooms in the area you cut. Hope this helps.

Your high temperatures made international news. Compounded with your current drought conditions, it's very possible that your lilac is stressed and in survival mode. Given your usual weather, you're probably not accustomed to watering your trees, so a long, slow soak could help it through the rest of the summer. However, it's important to rule out disease or pests as well. Are you aware of other lilacs in your area suffering the same symptoms? Have you examined the leaves and branches for signs of pests or disease? A local nursery ot garden center might also know of any regional lilac problems.

It will help if you can post close-up photos of leaves, both dead and alive (if any), bark and branch tips.

Thank you for your replies, the temperature has been unusually high here, there is another lilac tree in another part of the garden that is lush green and healthy. Reading that article makes me wonder if it's fungal, there is no obvious insect indicators. I've added photos of the brown leaves and the few green left. I will try giving it a good water see if that helps in the hope it is just the unusual weather. Crossing Fingers!
