Houseplant for me, on the porch under the edge of the carport.

Strong indirect most of the day, medium direct light around noon.
Full sun on the weekends when I bring them out.

The seed pods are notorious for popping open when ready: (gif link warning)

Mine aren't popping.
Tried squeezing an occasional one every week or so for months...nothing.

Last week I tried one and at the slightest touch it exploded like a tiny veggie firecracker.
Tried more with a seed collection bag ready, nothing.

Too little sun? Season?

Any suggestions appreciated, thanks.

old picture for variety reference, looks way better now.

Timing. When they're ripe, they're ripe and explode.

You may need to put a mesh or paper bag over a pod to get the seeds. Explosive dehiscence can seeds flying a surprising distance. For I. walleriana, you can pinch them gently between finger tips and if you feel the popping, grab it off of the plant and put your whole hand down into a bigger bag to catch the seeds when you let go.

Did you determine the species of this?

That's what I was trying, basically pulling a bag up over the pod before squeezing it.

Still no clue as to the species.

It really is.
Just got one!

Only one pod, but it was the biggest and fattest and popped with the neatest poof. Had my paper bag and got all the seeds.

Hurray!
I'm not sure this is the same species I know from Mom's garden, but with those, the pods had to get really ripe and theyd be yellow then. I remember being disappointed when I'd have those that weren't ready when I thought they were.

Stylophorum diphyllum, wood poppy, is another with fun pods.
Plant it and they will come.

The snap is so neat, I don't think I've ever experienced anything like it.

Another neat and quasi-similar thing was a seed I used to find in AZ, also based on moisture.

No clue what it was, I'll dig around.

Maybe Erodium cicutarium, or very similar concept.

Dry corkscrew with what I think is a single seed or maybe a pod.
Seed(s) are at the end of a shaft with the corkscrew wrapped around it.
Whole thing shaped like an arrow.

Once it falls to the soil, it sits until moisture hits and activates it, then cranks the corkscrew and drives the seed maybe 1" into the soil. So cool.

Neat time-lapse I found:

Pretty neat, huh?
I used to love watching them uncoil, they're just so well... engineered, evolved, suited, something like that.
