Hello!

I have 2 dracaena marginatas which live inside and I have added pictures! The slimmer and taller one was my dad's and is over 20 years old. Around 8 months ago I repotted and made a cutting and propogated it, which is very healthy and still thriving now and has grown roots. However, where I made the cutting from the original plant, no growth has grown back and the stem is shrivelled and dry, and the second stem/cane is also shrivelled slightly but the growth above is healthy. I am very worried about this plant as it was my dad's, who is no longer with us, and I really would like to save it but am scared to make further cuttings in case they do not root.

I also bought a second dracaena marginata over a year ago from a supermarket. This one wasn't doing great so I repotted it 2 months ago and made 7 cuttings, cutting away all the growth and stems and propogating them, of which only 1 has survived for 2 months now but I am not sure if it has grown roots. I disturbed the others by looking and they died shorty after so I am leaving that one alone for now! However, after I made cuttings from my second draceana, new growth appeared very quickly and it looked very healthy. But I have just noticed that the stems are wrinkled and the new growth on one of the stems is small and seems to be dying, however the growth on the other individual stems looks great - but I have noticed that all of the stems are shrivelled.

Please can you help me save these plants!

Thank you ❤️

Hi & welcome!

In pics 2-8, the shortest top branch looks dead. I would cut that off at the point where it meets the trunk.

I'm a little confused about the other plant. There's a pic showing a short stump with another trunk right next to it. Is the trunk next to the stump the cutting?

Hi,

Thank you for the reply!

With my 20 year old dracaena, there are 2 trunks in the pot. One of them has leaves, the other does not. The cutting I took from this plant is in a separate pot. I will add a full pic of the 20 year old, and a pic of the separate cutting that I took approx 8 months ago. I took the cutting from the smaller trunk that is now bare and is shrivelled and not producing leaves. The close up of the trunks are to show the wrinkles/shrivelled. The cutting in the small pot was taken from the shorter trunk of the 20 year old.

You're welcome. Some of the pics are out of focus a bit but from what I can see, things look normal for indoor specimens of this species. Is it possible to put them closer to the window? Are you able to tell if the short stump and the taller stem next to it are connected together below the soil?

There are a lot of pics of these trees in the plant database on this site:

I suppose that could be why the tree is not putting effort into growing foliage down there where there is very little light. It already has foliage where the light is more bright.
