Awright Patty good call!

Cutworm, that's what we called them. I've always thrown them out on the grass for the birds. The birds like to watch me garden and wait for the little tidbits thrown out for them.

I cut them

I squash slugs. Guess I should start cutting cut worms.

Thanks for the link, Lynn. Did find that cutworms can cause: "Stem chewed within 1 inch of base of plant (occurs during spring)" and the pic of victimized semp below looks like that kind of damage:

So now I will be killing all grubs/cutworms I come across. Along with the slugs.

ew! I guess I'm squeamish! I tend to not like spiders, and as a child my worst one was "daddy long legs" as an adult I have learnt more and more about them, so they totally don't even phase me - good thing because they seem to be the most prolific of any insect in my semp beds! There are tons of them on all the plants, all the pots, all the woodwork - everywhere! Why there? I don't know - glad I made my peace with them years ago! Can't imagine what I'd have to do! Rocks and scissors and knives and all!

I think you'd end up chopping up all your plants in the process of eliminating spiders Greg! Good thing you've come to terms. We don't have very many spiders this year, but the ants are insane. Had a major population explosion - they're everywhere! Well, only outside, but everywhere outside.
