Hello, all!

So my neighbors recently replaced their old worn out deck with a shiny new one, which is nice, I guess, except now it is level with the top of our fenceline. 😑 It feels extremely awkward because they can see very easily into my backyard and I can see everything they're doing and they are out on their deck 70% of the day. They've got kids bouncing around up there, she does some work out there, they are always there. I don't dislike these people at all, they're quite nice, but I hate feeling so exposed, especially after we had plenty of privacy between us to begin with.

This side of my yard is somewhat complicated, it's very narrow. Our deck is a large 20x20 ft square, to the left is their property, between us is a narrow side garden (which is maybe 7 ft deep tops) that then opens up to a slightly larger garden along the deck side at maybe 10 to 12 ft deep. Along my deck is a shrub row of boxwood but they aren't high enough for privacy, only 3.5 feet, and they grow very very slowly.

I could erect a privacy screen on my deck, however, the nearby garden bed is my only sun garden and I'd be pretty devastated to lose it... Further down is also our memorial garden for my cat (where the hostas are) and I don't want to interfere with that at all. As shown in the drawing the sun comes from the right side of my deck and their sightline is from the left. There are two large trellises behind the roses that hopefully will fill up with clematis but it remains to be seen. Everything from the roses outward is open for play which is about 12 ft long. I thought about planting shrubs there instead and removing the boxwood, and maybe shifting the pathway to sit next to the deck so we still have a walkway. I should note that I also don't have a lot of room for large growing plants here, I'd need something that gets tall but not wide and good for zone 6b.

Any suggestions welcome!

Sky pencil holly gets to about 10 feet tall and 2 feet wide and if that is not tall enough Skyrocket Juniper gets to about 20 feet and 3 feet wide. I think both are slow growers. Look up tall thin evergreens and some others will come up.

Thank you so much! The Holly has such a unique form and I love the shape of the Juniper. That's exactly what I'm looking for, narrow but tall so I can plant a nice neat row of them. Hopefully my local nurseries have something similar.

Arborvitaes are another tall but narrow evergreen, varying heights available, and relatively fast growers. You'd have to look through them to see which has the height you want.
