Easy to check: click on the forum name, in this case "Ask a Question" and scroll through the recent posts. Which I just did, and don't see a Q about Tree of Heaven. So go ahead and ask again.

Here are some anticipatory answers: Tree of Heaven, Ailanthus altissima, native to China and a fast growing invasive species in the US. A royal PITA for anyone who has them growing nearby. Smells sort of like rancid peanut butter, sprouts quickly and grows fast. However, it has very soft wood so is easy to cut.

It is known to produce allopathic chemicals which inhibit or prevent growth of some plants. Scattered sprouts and seedlings are best dug out but if any part of the roots remain they will re-sprout. If you want to know about what poisons kill it, someone else will have to answer.

Lana, I'm not sure what you're asking. Does your city have prohibitions against planting them? Many cities do.

Why a pain? (Or are you asking what is PITA...stands for Pain In The A**). Because they are so invasive. One tree begets scores of seedlings that grow incredibly fast and need constant removing, and their seeds can spread quite a distance throughout a neighborhood. It's a shame, because they are actually an attractive tree, in my opinion, but it smells, prevents other plants from growing, and spreads like crazy.

Hi amazingnature, Welcome!

I looked at your profile page and it seems that this is the first and only post you've made so far on garden.org, so apparently your first inquiry didn't go through.

Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altissima) is a beautiful tree that is native to China and an introduced species to other parts of the world. It's considered a highly invasive species in many areas because it's an aggressive spreader and takes over native species of plants. PITA stands for "Pain in the A _ _ " and some people find them to be a real pain because they are difficult to eradicate. Smiling

Some cities may have laws against planting invasive species but whether or not there are laws requiring citizens to remove them from their property is something that can only be determined by contacting your local authorities.

I found this page for the Invasive Species Council of BC, which has contact information at the bottom of the page that might be of help. https://bcinvasives.ca/invasiv...
